When To Go To Egypt

There's no time you should avoid but, in general, the best months to visit are October through April. That's when temperatures are the coolest. Or, should we say, the least hot. The last two weeks in December are the peak tourist season -- prices rise and it is likely that the Adrere Amellal will be booked well in advance.

Adrere Amellal - Siwa, Egypt

We are prepared to stand by this bold statement: The Adrere Amellal is the single coolest eco-resort on the planet!

To start with there's the resort's stunning setting at the foot of a dramatic rock-outcrop in a Sahara Desert oasis. The local village is populated by Berbers who've maintain a lifestyle and tranditions here that hasn't changed much over the centuries. They wear their traditional clothing, speaking their native Siwi (not Arabic) and harvesting the bountiful dates and olive by hand. Staying here it feels like you are not only in another place, but also another time.

Then there's the resort itself -- it feels a little like the Casba in Star Wars (except without the space aliens and bar fights). What's most amazing is that the entire hotel is constructed exclusively of materials available within 20 miles of this relatively desolate location. There’s not a single metal nail or imported anything in the entire place. No hotel item has Made In China engraved upon it. The pool is fed by an underground stream. The furniture is carved from local trees. There’s no electricity, though you’d hardly notice: The rooms are well lit with oil lamps and the resort interior is kept cool as a result of the ancient construction techniques used.

Finally, the Adrere Amellal is a remarkable value considering the experience of staying there. The resort’s service is superlative, up to the standards of any Four Seasons. The staff is attentive, but not suffocatingly so, and extremely knowledgeable of the local area. The room rate includes excellent meals, made with organic and locally produced products. Plus, there's a selection of activities, many at no extra charge. Go on a jeep safari into the desert, visit the town of Siwa or The Temple of Arun (an oracle constructed by Alexander The Great), take a dip in a hot springs or simply marvel at the brilliant night stars .

A stay at the Adrere Amellal will amaze and memorize.

I've been reading various blogs about eco resorts and have been surprised by what I've found listed as an eco-sort. Now THIS is a true eco-resort, and for the most interesting of reasons. It's not solar powered, or built with high tech "green" materials, or surrounded by permaculture gardens. It's simply built the way everything was built 200+ years ago... local materials, designed to maximize shade and natural cooling. Green architects take note... we have a lot to learn by studying the past. I wonder if the owners of Adrere Amellal would exchange some time at my eco-yoga resort in Costa Rica (http://www.anamayaresort.com)?
